Soporific plants are those that have sedative or relaxing properties that induce sleep or help reduce anxiety. These plants contain active compounds that act on the nervous system, promoting relaxation and helping to fall asleep.

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata), also known as passion flower, is a climbing plant from the Passifloraceae family. It is famous for its showy flowers and for its medicinal properties. It is mainly used in natural medicine to treat problems related to anxiety, insomnia, and stress, thanks to its sedative and relaxing effects. It is also used to treat nervous disorders and, in some cases, as a support to relieve digestive symptoms.

The leaves and stems of passionflower are the parts that are usually used in infusions, tinctures or extracts, although there are also supplements in the form of capsules. However, its consumption should be done with caution and, preferably, under the guidance of a health professional, since excessive consumption can cause adverse effects.

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a medicinal plant native to Europe and parts of Asia, known for its calming and relaxing properties. It has been used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat insomnia, anxiety and other disorders related to the nervous system.

The poppy (Papaver somniferum) is a herbaceous plant of the Papaveraceae family, known for its showy flowers and for being the source of important medicinal compounds, such as opium. This plant is mainly cultivated for its seeds and for its medicinal properties, which derive from the alkaloids it contains, such as morphine, codeine and thebaine.

In traditional medicine, poppy extracts have been used as sedatives, pain relievers, and in the treatment of coughs.

In the modern pharmaceutical industry, poppy derivatives such as morphine and codeine are used to treat severe pain.

Ephedra (Ephedra sinica), also known as ma huang in traditional Chinese medicine, is a plant containing alkaloids, mainly ephedrine, which act as stimulants of the nervous system. It has been used for thousands of years in Chinese medicine to treat respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis and allergies, due to its ability to dilate the bronchi and facilitate breathing.

American poppy generally refers to the California poppy (Eschscholzia californica), which is a plant native to western North America, especially California. It is often called the “California poppy” and is the official state flower of California. Unlike Papaver somniferum, this poppy does not contain the potent opioid alkaloids found in the common poppy.

The flowers were commissioned by an anesthesiologist who is passionate about his profession.
